Hoso-ka, which appears frequently not only in Buddhist art but also as a motif on kimono, is a fictional flower that is said to be a pattern that combines the most beautiful parts of countless flowers, such as peonies, Chinese peonies, and pomegranates. It is also said to be a motif of good fortune. It was popular in China during the Tang and Song dynasties, and in Japan during the Nara and Heian periods, and was used as a decorative pattern. It is also used in a variety of patterns on the Shoso-in treasures.

The fan surface is made of Japanese paper. The front side has a Hosohana pattern with cool colors.
