<Animal Designs> In ancient Chinese bronze vessels, not only real animals but also many imaginary beasts can be seen. Dragons, tigers, and phoenixes are motifs that are also known in Japan, but the figures they depict are unique.

Founded in 1960 for the purpose of preserving, researching and displaying art pieces formerly owned by the Sumitomo family. The ancient Chinese bronzeware and mirrors collected by the 15th head of the family, Sumitomo Shunsui, from the mid-Meiji to the Taisho periods are highly regarded around the world as the most comprehensive collection in terms of both quality and quantity outside of China.
