It is believed that the "Yu" was used to hold sake for ceremonies or a broth made from aromatic herbs to add flavor to the sake. The "Geyu" is characterized by the shape of two hawks back to back, and was named after the inscription "Ge" (ge) found on the container.
Founded in 1960 for the purpose of preserving, researching and displaying art pieces formerly owned by the Sumitomo family. The ancient Chinese bronzeware and mirrors collected by the 15th head of the family, Sumitomo Shunsui, from the mid-Meiji to the Taisho periods are highly regarded around the world as the most comprehensive collection in terms of both quality and quantity outside of China.
