Each piece is hand-molded and painted by artisans at a Shigaraki ware workshop in Shiga Prefecture, which is famous for its tanuki figurines.
"Tanuki cake" was popular throughout Japan in the 1960s and 70s, when fresh cream was expensive. A tanuki head is made from buttercream on a sponge cake base, then coated in chocolate. It has become popular again in recent years due to its handmade feel, which varies from shop to shop, and its retro look.
