[What is “Nyanduti”? ] It has a long history, and is said to have developed based on Spanish lace knitting, which was introduced along with religion in the 16th century, and was fused with Paraguay's unique culture. There are over 350 motifs that have been carefully passed down from mother to daughter, including Paraguay's rich nature and animals. From ethnic costumes to everyday clothing, Nyanduti plays an important role as a cultural symbol. However, many of the creators are women, and the aging population and lack of successors are becoming more serious year by year, so the Paraguayan government is putting effort into communicating its appeal to the world. As I enjoy chatting with them, I think about the women who are the artisans weaving nyanduti in the shade of the trees.
