What kind of Japanese sweets are hidden inside? Fun to look at, these small plates are like works of art

This is a confectionery sample book that feudal lords in the Edo period used when ordering sweets. The beautiful colors and cuteness of the Japanese sweets have the power to fascinate us beyond time. We borrowed this sample book from Tawaraya Yoshitomi, a long-established Kyoto confectionery store, who wanted to keep it close at hand and look at it forever, so we created a small plate with a modern redesign of the sweets featured in the sample book. Of course, you can use it as a plate, but it's also fun to compare the plate with the sweets information card that comes with it and look for changes in the design. Why not try collecting them as if you were making your own confectionery sample book?

This is a confectionery sample book in which Ishihara Tomijiro, the seventh generation owner of Tawaraya Yoshitomi, a Kyoto confectionery shop founded in 1755, wrote down his ideas for sweets. The sweets, intricately drawn with gofun (whitewash), are like works of art. Many of the sweets are themed around the seasons or famous places in waka poetry, with themes hidden in the colors and shapes.
