Ever since Japan first succeeded in cultivating pearls in the mid-Meiji period, Akoya pearls have gracefully adorned people's special occasion attire. Their brilliance is the culmination of oysters, the sea, and culturing techniques. Akoya pearls are made by inserting a perfectly round nucleus made from an oyster into an Akoya oyster, which then spends about a year forming a nacreous layer on top of the nucleus. The greatest appeal of Akoya pearls is their unique luster, which results from iridescent interference, and their delicacy not seen in other pearls. The dense overlapping of the nacreous layers creates a deep, soft color.

Pearls used in formal jewelry are usually required to be perfectly round and have a uniform shine. However, pearls created by nature vary in shape and color, and pearls with non-standard colors, shapes, or irregular shapes are called baroque pearls, and have not seen the light of day very often until now.
